Building and Township Vastu

In the modern era, townships have been very common. Today everyone wants to live together but yet alone with their own spaces and modern facilities. Town & Planning has been a part of human evolution since inception and this has been revolutionized with changing times.

In ancient times the requirements for townships was different which provided security The ancient Indians were the most developed intellectual and spiritual society, and their understanding of the laws of nature was profound and deep. They developed rules which are based upon the cosmic laws of nature for designing complete townships, creating centers of excellence that would allow the blossoming of the intellect and free mind.

As man developed through the spirals of time, there was a simultaneous shift in his level of intellectual and spiritual growth. Interestingly, its dwelling styles also changed. The less developed civilizations adopted less sophisticated building designs, some even primitive, and the more developed societies developed more complex building plans.

An important branch of Vastushastra relates to town planning and is called nagar-Vastu. In todays time, we can call it as building vastu.

The concept of town planning was well developed in the past, and one may safely assume that most of the settlements and towns of ancient India were happy settlements that prospered from brisk trade, supported intellectual and spiritual activities, and nurtured leisure and recreational pastimes.

Benefits of Building Vastu or vastu compliant townships

A Vastu-compliant town will have high levels of positive energy which will manifest as creativity and positive thoughts. In such a town all negative thoughts and actions like theft, hatred, quarrels and skirmishes between neighbors or rival groups, unhealthy politics, crime, and similar other negative actions will be automatically discouraged.

The creativity of a Vastu township will not only support commercial activities. It will also find its expression in excellent centers of Research and Development, and all types of education. Vastu for residential building and commercial building is equally important.

Vastu towns are indeed the need of the modern age. History will refer to them as Townships of Excellence.

Selection of Vastu Compliant Township

With change in the lifestyle and availability of modern engineering, resources have rendered obsolete some of the traditional methods of town planning as described in Vastu scriptures. This does not undermine the utility of Vastushastra for modern town planning Rather it calls for a fresh and innovative approach towards town planning as per Vastushastra. The vastu for building is purely based on logical concepts.

The Land

A Vastu-based township should be on flat land. It may slope slightly towards the North and/or East. The land should be free of hidden energy faults and if they are found, they should be corrected by an expert, failing which the land should be discarded. It is a crucial point of vastu for residential building.

The Roads

All roads inside the township should be running from East to West and from North to South.

The Plots

All plots should be facing the cardinal directions and not tilted more than 10 degrees. Only plots that fall into one of the following categories should be cut for residential, commercial, educational, or public use.

The plots should be either square or rectangular with no more than a 1:2 width-to-length ratio.

A North-South long rectangular plot is preferred to an East-West long plot as it receives more sunlight.
The township should discourage round, semi-circular plots, triangular plots, rhomboid plots, and plots of other odd shapes for residential or commercial purposes.

The Town Layout

Adequate open land should be left in appropriate directions to be developed as gardens and parks while taking vastu construction concept.

Either natural or manmade water bodies should exist within and around the township in the northern and eastern sectors.

The township should have its educational institutes, business districts, public buildings, service industry, and other activities in properly designated areas as per Vastushastra.

The township should be eco-friendly with water harvesting, waste recycling, optimum utilization of natural energies of wind and sun, and zero wastage of underground water.

The township should promote a sustainable green revolution, minimum use of chemicals and plastics and emphasize the abundance of open space, free flow of wind, and aim at extremely low pollution.

Any cremation ground should be outside the township.

Temples of powerful deities like Kali and Bhairon should preferably be outside the township.

These are things are utmost crucial as per the building vastu principles.
